In a PM interview, even thought it is Product Design question, we are not supposed to design anything using any tool.

WHY? - What is interviewer looking for

Product Design Process

Think using ‘Design Thinking Framework. It has 5 steps

  1. Ask clarifying questions
    1. For getting better idea of the problem
      1. Why doing this? what is benefit for company? What is success for this idea?
      2. Who are users? What benefit they are getting?
      3. What are you supposed to do? etc
    2. Make and ask time for thinking of a solution approach
    3. Think logically and be creative according to situation
  2. Empathize - Understand deeply about users
    1. Who? What? Why?
    2. Categorize them into groups - Demographics, backgrounds, behaviours etc
  3. Define - Identify what these users need and NOTE down (on paper)
    1. Target user?
    2. User problem?
    3. Primary and secondary needs?
    4. As interviewer on their views and take inputs on use cases if required
  4. Ideate - Your solutions for the problems of users using the product. HOW you think about user and how your ideas fit the problem is tested and no one right answer..reasoning is key
    1. List down your solutions
    2. Existing product?
      1. List down current pain points as per problem statement
      2. Your ways to improve it
    3. New product?
      1. Based on target users needs, describe the solution/ideas about the problem
      2. Create a case and define its success with proposed idea
  5. If required
    1. Prepare rough wireframes (if needed)
    2. Define product metrics and KPI - Quantitatively describe how product solved the problem
    3. Identify competitors and how this new product idea differs from their product

Following the above framework helps ideally

Think like a PM for any design question
